The Nyayo Era And The Public Memory Of H.E. Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, CGH.
His Excellency Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, CGH (1924 to 2020), was the second and longest-serving President of the Republic of Kenya, holding office from 22 August 1978 to 30 December 2002. He served as Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces throughout his twenty-four-year tenure.
Before the presidency he served as the third Vice-President of Kenya from 1967 to 1978. He was popularly known as Nyayo, the Kiswahili word for footsteps, framing his leadership as a continuation of the founding generation, with a public philosophy of peace, love and unity.
Often referred to in later years as Baba wa Taifa, he is remembered for his long influence on Kenya's political life, the expansion of basic education, and the consolidation of national institutions during a period of significant change in Africa and the wider world.
He was awarded the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (CGH). The gallery follows his journey from teacher and parliamentarian to Head of State, through documents, photographs, official addresses and personal items.
